Ever heard of “proposal season”? Falling between the last week of November (starting on Thanksgiving in America) and Valentine’s Day, this 12-week period accounts for almost 40% of engagements every year. As the final day in “proposal season”, Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to pop the question to your soon-to-be fiancée.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start planning exactly how to propose to the love of your life. Of course, you could always take a short drive to your local proposal hotspots, however, we expect to see a significant number of couples getting engaged at home this year.

Whilst proposing at home has its limitations, there’s no reason why you can’t still make it one of the most memorable moments of both your lives! In this blog post, we share five romantic at-home Valentine’s Day proposal ideas.

Movie Night

Is your fiancée a fan of Harry Potter? Marvel? The Hunger Games? Plan a romantic movie marathon with your partner’s favourite series of films, starting in the evening and watching late into the night. Make sure you have plenty of snacks on-hand, and of course, ordering your favourite takeaway is a must. Somewhere around the halfway mark in your marathon, grab some snacks from the kitchen and when you come back into the room, drop down on one knee. Your partner won’t be expecting a thing!

Spell It Out

Yes, this is the stereotypical “Will You Marry Me?” banner flying past on an aeroplane but spelling it out can seriously be one of the most unforgettable ways to propose. This could involve writing your proposal using food, custom-printed candles or even with fairy lights set on a landmark that can be seen from your house. If you live with friends or family, you could get them involved with custom t-shirts that spell out the big question — in a socially distanced way, of course!

Holiday-Themed Evening

Do you and your partner have a particular destination that is special to both of you? Maybe it’s the first holiday you went on together? Or the place you’ve both dreamed of visiting together one day? If so, why not plan a romantic evening based on the destination? For example, if you both have a love for Spain then you could mix some cocktails, eat delicious paella, listen to latin music and dance away into the night.

Garden Treasure Hunt

This one’s just as exciting to plan as it is to take part in. Spend the day creating an elaborate treasure hunt with clues scattered around your garden and/or house, with each one leading to a reward and another clue. Start off with a small gift like a bar of chocolate, gradually building up to the ultimate gift — your hand in marriage. To make this treasure hunt even more sentimental, you could also hide small keepsakes or photos from your time together.

Board Games Night

Last but not least, why not plan a romantic board game night with your future fiancée? From Twister to Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit to Chess, you’ll have a romantic evening packed full of fun and nostalgia. For the third or fourth board game, replace a counter or dice with your engagement ring — ahead of time, of course. When you open up the box, get down on one knee and your partner will have the surprise of their life!
