Should I invest in jewellery?
Jewellery is a great liquid asset, meaning it can be converted into cash with minimal impact on its overall value. Gold jewellery, in particular, is an excellent investment choice as it rarely decreases in value.
If you’re considering purchasing jewellery as an investment piece, read our investment guide or discover the ten items we advise investing in.
Should I insure my jewellery?
We strongly advise you to insure your most valuable pieces of jewellery to protect yourself financially in cases of damage or theft. At Hatton Jewellers, we gladly provide insurance valuations for all our pieces to help you.
When insuring jewellery, we advise considering the single-item limit. This is the maximum amount of money a single item can be insured on your insurance policy. If the value of your jewellery is above this limit, you may need to specify this on your policy or take out a separate policy for your jewellery piece.

Should gold jewellery be hallmarked?
All gold above one gram must be hallmarked according to UK law. The same is true for platinum over 0.5 grams, palladium over one gram and silver over 7.78 grams.
At Hatton Jewellers, every piece in our collection boasts a UK hallmark stamp. Our blog on jewellery hallmarks can help you to understand more.
How should I clean my jewellery?
We advise having your jewellery professionally cleaned every six months. This adds the benefit of allowing a professional jeweller to look over the piece for any subtle damages. You can use this service at our Chelmsford store.
To clean your jewellery at home in between professional cleanings, we advise:
- Fill a tub with lukewarm water and some mild detergent.
- Soak your jewellery in the mixture.
- Brush the jewellery with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
How should I look after my jewellery?
Maintain your jewellery by removing it during the following activities:
- Cleaning and housework tasks such as washing up.
- Swimming, as both saltwater and chlorine can be damaging.
- Gardening, as rocks may scratch the jewellery.
- Rough or contact sports, as the jewellery may be scratched and damaged.
- Spraying perfume or hair spray, as these chemicals can dull the metal.
When not wearing your jewellery, you should place it in its box or a soft, lint-free pouch.
