The Rise In Used Jewellery

Over the last few years, you may have noticed an increase in the number of jewellers stocking second-hand jewellery. We’ve seen a huge spike in the demand for used jewellery both online and at our high-street store in London.

This is no surprise really; following the Great Recession of 2008, a lot of people across the UK had limited spare cash. This led to an increased demand for discounted fine jewellery, with some retailers offering discounts of up to 50% off the standard retail price for used pieces. Since then, the market for pre-owned jewellery has only continued to grow.

But there still seems to be a stigma around buying second-hand jewellery. “Why would I want to buy someone else’s old jewellery?” “Isn’t used jewellery tacky and cheap?

We don’t really know where this stigma came from. Who wouldn’t want a well-maintained piece of jewellery with an intriguing history, professionally polished or refurbished so it looks brand new, and for half of its original price?

More for your money

When shopping for second-hand jewellery, you’ll probably notice a significant price difference compared to new jewellery. This isn’t because it’s worse quality than new jewellery, but simply because a lot of precious metals and gemstones depreciate in value pretty quickly. If you’re lucky, buying pre-owned jewellery at the right stage in its lifecycle could even result in your piece gaining value over a short period of time. Used jewellery opens the door to some real gems – no pun intended – at incredible prices.

Quality material

One of the most common assumptions with used jewellery is that the piece will look old, tacky or dirty. This really couldn’t be further from the truth. If the piece has already lasted so long, you can be certain that it’s made of well-maintained, high-quality materials. Even so, most professional jewellers have very high standards when it comes to buying used jewellery; if they don’t think they’ll be able to fully restore the piece then they won’t buy it. At Hatton Jewellers, we fully refurbish and polish pre-owned jewellery upon receipt so that you can be sure you’re only buying the very best quality.

Rich with history

When buying second-hand jewellery, your purchase is almost guaranteed to carry some sort of history with it. Particularly with vintage and antique jewellery, it’s possible that your jewellery has been through decades of stories and memories. Who knows where your piece has travelled over the years! The mystery that comes with buying pre-owned jewellery is something you simply don’t get with new jewellery.

Timeless classics

Classics never go out of fashion. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a classic piece of jewellery then you have something that will stay with you for life. Make sure to maintain your piece to the highest standards and who knows what it could be worth in 20 years’ time. Maybe it could even become a family heirloom…

Good for the environment

Another benefit of buying second-hand jewellery is that you can be comfortable knowing you’re not contributing to the demand for new gold or diamonds. Whilst mining ‘blood diamonds’ isn’t anywhere near as big an issue as a few decades ago, it still happens. This small decision to go used can have a huge impact on areas of the world that are heavily mined for their diamonds and precious metals.

Buying second-hand jewellery really is a great way to save some money on your purchase. Whether you’re looking for a beautiful engagement ring to propose with or a cheap watch to start off your collection, you’ll be sure to find something that matches your taste.
