With over 40 years in business, our team of jewellery experts have gained a lot of knowledge on the products that we offer. We recently sat down with our founder, Robert Cuomo, to discuss how he got into jewellery manufacturing and his favourite pieces to make.

Interview With Jewellery Expert, Robert Cuomo

Tell us about your background and how you discovered jewellery making

Since leaving school when I was 16, I have been in jewellery manufacturing and have loved it ever since. 23 years of expertise and growth in knowledge over the years has helped give me a better understanding of the best methods to combine quality and durability. Adapting these methods and knowledge in jewellery making has taken Hatton Jewellers to where it is today. 

How would you describe your style in 3 words?

What does a typical working day look like for you?

A typical working day in the jewellery industry and for me at Hatton Jewellers can vary so much. Working in such a fast-paced environment with a large catalogue of products means my day can change within minutes. It’s a very exciting industry to work in! Throughout a typical day at Hatton, our main focus is on listening to our customers and providing the best service, plus constant development to keep us at the forefront of our craft. 

What type of jewellery do you like making the most?

When it comes to making jewellery there isn’t a particular piece I prefer to make. I enjoy making anything that we believe people will love and cherish knowing that our items are British-made to last forever.

What is the most complex piece to make and why?

Designs that have a high amount of gemstones are the most complex pieces of jewellery to make. When it comes to making pieces with gemstones we have to drill an abundance of holes to accommodate these stones. This can affect the strength of the piece, meaning we have to find a way to balance the strength whilst being conscious that the more gold we use to add durability the higher the item will be in price. 

What is your favourite metal to work with?

My favourite metal to work with when manufacturing jewellery is 18ct yellow gold. The metal is nice and soft to work with, without being so soft that it alters strength. This allows us to make some stunning pieces of jewellery for our Hatton Jewellers collections. 

Why did you choose Hatton Gardens as your location?

When it came to picking a location for Hatton Jewellers, Hatton Gardens was the go-to spot. Hatton Garden is the ultimate hub for jewellery in the UK. In fact, it's one of the best spots in the world! 

What are your 3 top tips when designing jewellery? 

1. Keep the process simple
2. Use the best quality materials
3. With a great design, you also have to think about outstanding durability. This is often overlooked by designers as they only think about the look but ultimately the buyer will want to wear it for a lifetime so it has to last!

What is Hatton Jewellers' best selling product and why do you think this is? 

Our best-selling products are classic, solid gold chains in all designs and weights. Our gold chains are manufactured in a wide range to fit all budgets and styles. From baby jewellery to heavy gents’ chains, we cover everything! 

Where do you see Hatton Jewellers in 10 years?

In 10 years time, I see Hatton Jewellers continuing to grow within the jewellery industry. We hope that Hatton Jewellers will continue to thrive as the go-to brand for fine jewellery, as our expertise is unrivalled and we understand the importance of delivering the perfect services that all high-end retailers should provide.
