There’s no doubt that iced out jewellery is one of the fastest growing fashion trends in recent years. First touted by the likes of Run DMC and LL Cool J in the ‘80s and ‘90s, iced out jewellery is now an essential accessory for almost any occasion, whether you’re dressing up for a night out in the city or simply going to meet some friends for lunch. In this blog post, we help you pick the perfect piece by highlighting five important considerations when buying iced out jewellery…

Style and Design

Iced Out Cross Pendant The first thing to consider when it comes to buying iced out jewellery is the style. If you’re looking for a gem-set bracelet or chain, would you prefer a belcher style, rope style, Miami Cuban style or something more unique? If you’re after a gem-set pendant, are you more drawn to a subtle design like our iced out cross pendant, or would you pick a more distinctive piece like our spinning world pendant? Still not sure? Then take inspiration from some of the show-stopping styles worn by popular rappers such as Quavo, T-Pain or Drake.

Coordination

Iced out jewellery looks so much better with company; if you’re looking to buy an iced out cuban link chain, it’s going to be far more striking combined with an iced out bracelet. Similarly, if you often wear yellow gold, buying a gem-set chain made from white gold or platinum might look out of place. Depending on how far you want to take this, you can even coordinate jewellery with your clothing. For example, if you live in red trainers or hoodies, our bulldog’s head pendant with red enamel eyes would be a perfect finishing touch. Iced Out Bulldog Pendant

Type of Gemstone

Most iced out jewellery is set with one of two types of gemstone; cubic zirconia or diamonds. Of course, most of us desire to own diamond jewellery, but with genuine diamond-set pieces starting from thousands of pounds — and with some pieces costing millions — this isn’t always realistic. Cubic zirconia, also known as “lab-made diamond”, offers a more affordable option without sacrificing quality. In fact, because cubic zirconia is made in a controlled environment, it usually looks even more impressive than real diamonds. At just a fraction of the price, there’s a reason it’s so popular for creating an iced out effect!

The 4 C’s

All diamonds, like the ones we sell at Hatton Jewellers, should be certified by the World Gemological Institute (WGI) or the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), with a grade for each of the 4 C’s — Cut, Colour, Carat & Clarity. If you’re buying diamond jewellery in-store, this means it’s important to ask your jeweller for details on each grading. If you’re not purchasing in person, you may be better off buying iced out jewellery set with cubic zirconia; where there’s any doubt about quality, there’s a risk you could pay over the odds for low-quality diamonds.  Pay close attention to the cut of the diamond — this determines the sparkle of your gemstones, which is so important if you want to achieve this trend’s signature shine. If your diamonds are cut too shallow or too deep, they won’t reflect light properly, resulting in a dull appearance. It’s also important to consider the colour of your diamond — graded from D (Colourless) to Z (Light) — and the clarity of your diamond — graded from FL (Flawless) to I3 (Included). Finally, you can consider the carat. However, as this refers to the weight of your diamond, it’s often viewed as the least important of the 4 C’s for this trend.

Payment Method

Once you’ve found a piece that you love, it’s time to decide how to pay for it. While some people prefer to pay for their piece outright, with expensive items, it often makes more sense to spread the cost of your purchase over the space of several months with a finance plan Here at Hatton Jewellers, we offer a 0% interest-free finance option on all jewellery over £300, allowing you to better manage the cost of your purchase without paying any interest. Another popular payment option is our 90-day layaway plan; this simply requires a 25% deposit to hold the item, before having 3 months to pay off the remaining balance. Considering these things when buying iced out jewellery is sure to help you find the perfect piece. Do you have any other tips for what to consider when buying bling? We’d love to hear!
